Singing is a universally joyous experience, especially with other people. It easily transcends language barriers, and allows us to connect on such a profoundly deep level. Being a part of Sterling Ensemble has given me an incredibly rare opportunity to create more of those beautiful connections with people that are just as passionate about not only high-level music making, but creating core memories that we can cherish together.

I’ve always loved performing in a variety of genres, whether at an opera house or a jazz club or in my living room writing my own songs. Choir sparked my interest because it gives an opportunity to create something much larger than ourselves in collective artistry together. I’m looking forward to returning to Sterling Ensemble this season!

Singing has been a core part of my life longer than I can remember. I joined Sterling Ensemble at such a pivotal time, when so many of us were re-evaluating and asking, “what in my life is truly essential?”. This ensemble consistently reminds me that making great music with great people belongs at the very top of that list.

The art of storytelling is something I cherish. What an amazing opportunity it is to empathize, understand, and tell the stories of others and transform the lives of those willing to tune in to hear these stories. I am so grateful and honored to be singing in my first season with Sterling Ensemble. Being with these extremely talented musicians is a wonderful way to achieve artistic excellence together and an amazing opportunity to come together in community with such caring, kind and dedicated people.

I have been singing in choirs for over a decade and being a part of any choir ensemble absolutely feels like a second home to me. The communities that emerge through making music together in choir have truly shaped me as a person and performer. So many of my fondest memories and experiences have come from being a choir member, which is an aspect of my life that I never want to leave.

I wanted to be just like my pianist father but preschool me was told I could not take piano lessons until I could read. It didn’t work - I learned to read! And while piano did not stick, music and singing did. Singing in small groups like Sterling is the most fulfilling experience, and I am overjoyed to be a part of it in every rehearsal and concert.

I was raised in a musical family and began to sing and perform at a young age. As I have grown in life and in my craft, music has been an incalculable gift that has opened doors and provided me with opportunities to adventure the world, breathe in its many wonders, and encounter incredible artists and humans. Whenever I see the news or hear of the horrors that take place around the world, I feel dismayed by the disunity, ugliness, and cacophony all around us. Sterling Ensemble provides a space to pursue artistic excellence and sync with like-minded musicians who desire to change the narrative by creating and injecting beauty and harmony into the disorder.

For me, I think of music as a tacit, universal language one need not "study intensely" to enjoy. With that said, Sterling provides me with the necessary tools, environment, guidance, and peers to push myself and learn how to elevate music beyond what I've felt I can do on my own.

While creating and leading Christian contemporary music as a career brings such joy, Sterling Ensemble provides a bright spot of skill, beauty, and high caliber music making in my week that is sacred in and of itself. It is an honor and a privilege to be able to create alongside the passionate, talented, and kind musicians in this group.

Making art with other musicians, especially musicians this passionate, elevates the individuals beyond what they can achieve themselves. It is through this collaboration and openness that we achieve true beauty and oneness with the world we live in.

The ability to tell stories through song is a life source to many, including myself. There’s no greater joy for me than to create music, and with the addition of doing it in a group, I have the ability to fit into something bigger than myself and make something much more beautiful than I could make alone.

My favorite instrument is the human voice. The inclusion of text and the unmatchable imperfection that comes from each person’s unique voice transmits deep emotion from performer to listener. It’s intoxicating.

I love melting away into everyone else’s sound. It’s such a beautiful experience to listen to a group of individually talented people put their egos aside to become part of a whole. I also love the anchor of consistency that sterling provides. No matter what happens in my week I know I’m going to get to make music with kind and talented people who know how to have fun but also know when to bring their A-game.

Choral music combines some of my favorite aspects of music and composition, such as beauty, harmonic depth, and poetry, all while using the human voice as its medium. Being a part of Sterling Ensemble allows me to study, learn, and perform this music with other musicians who are driven to pursue excellence at its highest standard.
